311 is an American rock band formed in 1988 in Omaha, Nebraska, by vocalist/guitarist Nick Hexum, bassist Aaron 'P-Nut' Wills, drummer Chad Sexton, and lead guitarist Jim Watson, with Tim Mahoney replacing Watson in 1990 and Doug 'SA' Martinez joining in 1992 as vocalist and turntablist. The band's name derives from an Omaha police code for indecent exposure. Their music blends rock, rap, funk, and reggae influences. After independent releases like Unity (1991, platinum-certified) and Dammit!, 311 signed with Capricorn Records in 1992, issuing Music (1993, gold) and Grassroots (1994). Their 1995 self-titled album achieved triple platinum status, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard 200, driven by singles 'Down' (number one on Modern Rock Tracks) and 'All Mixed Up'. The band has released thirteen studio albums and sold over 8.5 million units in the U.S., with eight reaching the Billboard Top 10. 311 is known for extended live performances featuring high-energy sets, intricate drumming by Sexton, and improvisation, often lasting over two hours.
