Al Jardine is a founding member of the Beach Boys, formed in 1961 in Hawthorne, California. Born in Lima, Ohio on September 3, 1942, Jardine met Brian Wilson in high school and was instrumental in bringing together the group that would define the California surf rock sound. As rhythm guitarist, bassist on early recordings, and vocalist, Jardine sang lead on the number-one hit "Help Me, Rhonda" (1965) and contributed to other notable singles including "Then I Kissed Her" (1965) and "Sloop John B." Beyond performing, Jardine wrote or co-wrote songs for albums including Holland, Sunflower, and Surf's Up. He remained active with the Beach Boys through touring in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, and participated in reunion projects including a 2012 album and 50th anniversary tours. Jardine was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received a Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy in 2001 as a member of the Beach Boys.
