Alanis Morissette was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, in 1974 and began her recording career in the early 1990s with two dance-pop albums before shifting toward rock. Her 1995 breakthrough album, Jagged Little Pill, made her a major alternative rock artist and included songs such as "You Oughta Know," "Hand in My Pocket," and "Ironic." Her music is known for confessional lyrics, an emotive vocal style, and a rock sound that blends alternative rock with pop and post-grunge elements. Morissette has won seven Grammy Awards and 13 Juno Awards, and Jagged Little Pill remains her best-known release. In live performance, she is known for singing material that foregrounds emotional intensity and personal storytelling, consistent with the style identified in her recorded work.
