Alice Phoebe Lou, born 19 July 1993 in Cape Town, South Africa, began her music career busking on Berlin streets after moving to Europe in 2012 following high school. She self-released her debut EP Momentum in 2014 and live album Live at Grüner Salon later that year, funding her independent path after rejecting label offers post-TEDx Berlin performance. Her style draws from folk, jazz, and indie influences, shaped by street performances and early inspirations like Patti Smith and Cat Power. She has released six self-funded studio albums: Orbit (2016), Paper Castles (2019), Glow (2021), Child's Play (2021), Shelter (2023), and Oblivion (2025), plus live albums and EPs. Notable achievements include SXSW appearances (2015-2019), opening for Rodriguez in South Africa (2016), and her song 'She' shortlisted for the 90th Oscars Original Song. Since 2019, she leads the side project Strongboi with her band's keyboardist. Lou remains known for her intimate live shows, honed through years of street performing in Berlin parks and U-Bahn stations, transitioning to venues worldwide including Primavera Sound.
