Behemoth is a Polish blackened death metal band formed in Gdańsk in 1991. Founded by Adam "Nergal" Darski when he was 14 years old, the band evolved from traditional black metal with pagan themes to a more complex blackened death metal sound. Their 1999 album Satanica marked a significant stylistic shift, introducing death metal growls and incorporating Middle Eastern influences alongside their signature multi-layered vocal approach. The band's 2003 release Zos Kia Cultus (Here and Beyond) established their international presence and led to North American tours with major acts including Deicide and Amon Amarth. Known for their theatrical live performances featuring elaborate costumes and face paint, Behemoth has released 13 studio albums and remains active in the extreme metal scene. Nergal is the sole remaining founding member, with the current lineup featuring Inferno on drums, Orion on bass, and Seth on guitar.
