Big Bad Voodoo Daddy formed in Ventura, California, in 1989 by Scotty Morris (guitar and vocals) and Kurt Sodergren (drums). The band's name originated from an autograph by blues guitarist Albert Collins. They perform interpretations of 1940s and 1950s swing music alongside original compositions in a similar style, blending jazz, swing, and Dixieland elements. Early independent releases included Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Watchu' Want for Christmas? on Big Bad Records. Exposure came from songs in the 1996 film Swingers, leading to a Capitol Records deal and albums such as Americana Deluxe and This Beautiful Life. They performed at the Super Bowl XXXIII halftime show in 1999 and have maintained a steady touring schedule. The band maintains its core lineup, including Dirk Shumaker (double bass), Andy Rowley (baritone saxophone), Glen Marhevka (trumpet), and Karl Hunter (saxophones and clarinet). Known for high-energy live shows that evoke the swing era, they have appeared in films and TV series including Friends and Despicable Me.
