Big Thief is an American indie rock band with folk roots, formed in Brooklyn, New York, in 2015. The band consists of Adrianne Lenker on guitar and vocals, Buck Meek on guitar and backing vocals, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on drums. All members attended Berklee College of Music, though they formed the group after graduating. Lenker and Meek met in New York in 2012 and began collaborating, later recruiting Oleartchik and Krivchenia during the recording of their debut album. Their musical style blends indie rock, folk rock, and DIY elements, characterized by Lenker's introspective lyrics and raw guitar work. Notable releases include the debut Masterpiece (2016) on Saddle Creek Records, Capacity (2017), U.F.O.F. (2019), and Two Hands (2019), both on 4AD. Songs like 'Mary' from Capacity ranked on Pitchfork's 200 Best Songs of the 2010s list. Big Thief is known for energetic live performances that emphasize friendship and organic connection among members, often drawing large crowds.
