Billy Idol, born William Michael Albert Broad on November 30, 1955, in Stanmore, Middlesex, England, began his music career in 1976 as a guitarist in the punk rock band Chelsea before co-founding Generation X with Tony James later that year in London. As lead singer of Generation X, he contributed to three studio albums on Chrysalis Records, including their self-titled debut in 1977, achieving success in the UK punk scene before the band disbanded in 1981. In 1981, Idol moved to New York City to launch his solo career, partnering with guitarist Steve Stevens. His debut solo album, Billy Idol (1982), featured hits 'Dancing with Myself' and 'White Wedding,' which gained heavy MTV rotation. Follow-up Rebel Yell (1983) included the title track and 'Eyes Without a Face,' along with three UK top 10 singles. Later releases include Charmed Life (1990) and Cyberpunk (1993). Idol's live performances emphasize his punk roots blended with glam rock energy, highlighted by his distinctive sneer and stage presence developed from Generation X shows and sustained through solo tours.
