Black Flag is an American punk rock band formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California, initially as Panic by guitarist Greg Ginn and vocalist Keith Morris. The lineup stabilized with bassist Chuck Dukowski and drummer Brian Migdol, leading to their first performance in December 1977 and name change to Black Flag in 1978. Ginn founded SST Records in 1978, releasing the band's debut 'Nervous Breakdown' EP. Vocalists rotated through Ron Reyes, Dez Cadena, and Henry Rollins from 1981. The band's style accelerated punk tempos into hardcore, addressing suburban boredom and banality, later incorporating heavy metal elements. Notable releases include the 1981 album Damaged. They disbanded in 1986 after extensive touring. Black Flag's live shows featured high aggression, fostering mosh pits and slam dancing among audiences.
