Cabaret Voltaire formed in Sheffield, England, in 1973 with Stephen Mallinder on vocals and bass, Richard H. Kirk on guitar, keyboards, and sound manipulation, and Chris Watson on sound manipulation, tapes, and keyboards. Named after the Dadaist nightclub in Zürich, the group pioneered industrial music through DIY electronics, tape loops, and performance art influenced by post-punk and surrealism. Their sound evolved from noisy experiments on debut album Mix-Up (1979) and EP Nag Nag Nag to structured dance tracks on Voice of America (1980), Red Mecca (1981), 2x45 (1982), The Crackdown (1983), and Micro-Phonies (1984), featuring tracks like 'Sensoria' and 'Yashar'. Watson departed in 1981, leaving Mallinder and Kirk to continue until 1994; Kirk revived the project until his death in 2021. Known for provocative live shows in the 1970s that incorporated situationist tactics, such as playing tapes in public spaces and Dada-inspired performances, they blended experimental noise with emerging electronic dance elements.
