Coachella is not a musical artist or band but the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, founded in 1999 by promoters Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen of Goldenvoice at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Inspired by a 1993 Pearl Jam concert at the site and aiming to contrast Woodstock '99, the inaugural two-day event in October featured headliners Rage Against the Machine, Tool, and Beck across rock and alternative genres. Cancelled in 2000, it returned in 2001 as a one-day April event with Jane’s Addiction, Weezer, and Fatboy Slim.
