Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds, known professionally as Daniel Caesar, was born on April 5, 1995, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, to Jamaican and Bajan parents. Raised in a Christian household with gospel influences, he began releasing music independently after being kicked out of his home at age 17, starting with EPs Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim's Paradise (2015). His debut studio album Freudian (2017) featured collaborations with H.E.R. and Kali Uchis, earning three Grammy nominations and a win for Best R&B Performance for 'Best Part'. Caesar's style blends R&B, soul, gospel, and alternative elements, with introspective lyrics on love, faith, and identity. Subsequent releases include Case Study 01 (2019), Never Enough (2023), which won a Juno Award, and Son of Spergy (2025), his first top-ten Billboard 200 album. He contributed to Justin Bieber's 'Peaches' (2021), which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Caesar performs live with emotionally charged soul vocals and acoustic guitar, as seen in tours supporting his albums.
