Darryl Williams is a San Diego-born bassist and composer who began playing bass guitar at age 13. He performed locally from age 15, opening for Lakeside and Shirley Caesar, and at 16 backed Al Green. After studying jazz at San Diego State University under mentors like Marshall Hawkins and Bob Magnusson, he became a regular in the San Diego scene, gigging with artists such as Hollis Gentry and Kamau Kenyatta. Williams released his debut album That Was Then in 2008, praised by JazzTimes, followed by Here to Stay in 2017, featuring the Billboard top 10 single of the same name. Singles like 'Do You Remember' (No. 2 Billboard, 2019) and 'San Jose' with Rick Braun highlight his chart success. He has recorded with Rick Braun, Euge Groove, and Jackiem Joyner, and performed with Jonathan Butler, Gerald Albright, and Dave Koz. Known for his melodic bass lines in smooth and contemporary jazz, Williams delivers energetic live shows, drawing from experience opening for Al Green and touring with Chaka Khan, and sharing stages with smooth jazz artists.
