David Lee Roth (born October 10, 1954) is an American rock vocalist known for his energetic stage presence and showmanship. He served as the lead singer of Van Halen during three separate periods: 1974–1985, 1996, and 2007–2020, when the band disbanded. Van Halen's 1978 debut album reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 and eventually sold over 12 million copies, earning Diamond certification from the RIAA. Roth brought a distinct musical approach to the band, drawing from soul and funk influences rather than the heavy metal sound the Van Halen brothers initially played. Beyond Van Halen, Roth maintained a successful solo career, releasing eight albums with four achieving RIAA Gold or Platinum certification. His solo hits included "California Girls," "Yankee Rose," and "Just Like Paradise" in the late 1980s. In 2006, Roth rejoined Van Halen for a North American tour that became the highest-grossing in the band's history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 as a member of Van Halen.
