Death from Above 1979 is a Canadian rock duo from Toronto, Ontario, formed in 2001 by bassist Jesse F. Keeler and drummer/vocalist Sebastien Grainger. The band originated from a jam session after a planned concert was canceled due to the September 11 attacks. They play a style of dance-punk characterized by bass, drums, and synths, without a guitarist. Their debut album, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine, was released in 2004, followed by a breakup in 2006. The duo reunited in 2011, releasing The Physical World in 2014, which reached No. 3 on the Canadian Billboard album chart and No. 28 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Subsequent albums include Outrage! Is Now (2017) and Is 4 Lovers (2021). In 2014, they shortened their name to Death From Above for new releases. They are known for high-energy live performances featuring their raw, two-piece setup.
