Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988. The group includes Chino Moreno, Stephen Carpenter, Abe Cunningham, and Frank Delgado, with Sergio Vega formerly serving as bassist. Their sound began within the late-1980s and 1990s heavy music scene and is commonly associated with alternative metal and early nu metal, while later recordings incorporated atmospheric and experimental elements. The band’s 1995 debut album, Adrenaline, brought them into wider attention, followed by albums including Around the Fur, White Pony, and Diamond Eyes. Deftones are known for combining heavy guitar work with melodic vocals and shifting song dynamics. In live settings, they are typically presented as a touring rock and metal act with a catalog spanning three decades.
