Hayden Silas Anhedönia (born March 24, 1998), known professionally as Ethel Cain, is an American singer-songwriter and record producer from the Florida panhandle. Raised in a Southern Baptist community by a deacon father, she began releasing music in 2017 under aliases like White Silas before adopting the Ethel Cain moniker in 2019, inspired by a matronly American name and the biblical Cain. Her early extended plays include Carpet Bed (2019), Golden Age (2019), and Inbred (2021), featuring singles like 'Crush' and 'Michelle Pfeiffer'. Her debut album Preacher’s Daughter (2022) narrates the fictional Ethel Cain's life in a Southern Gothic style, blending ambient, dream pop, slowcore, and country elements with themes of religious trauma, doomed romance, and Americana. She produced the record herself in her bedroom and a Toronto studio. Subsequent releases include the studio recording Perverts (2025), experimenting with drone music, and her second album Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You (2025), a prequel to her debut. Ethel Cain's music centers on slow, ethereal vocals and narrative-driven lyrics exploring Southern upbringing and personal turmoil.
