Flamingo was a rock band formed in Minneapolis in 1977 by Robert Wilkinson and Johnny Rey (guitars), Jody Ray (bass), Bob Meide (percussion), and Joseph Behrend (keyboards and vocals). The group released a 1978 EP on Bigger Than Life Records featuring tracks like “Smart Girl,” “We Do What We Like,” “One More Night,” and “I Remember Romance,” which drew critical attention. After touring East Coast clubs such as Max’s Kansas City, founding member Johnny Rey departed in 1980, and the band renamed to Flamin’ Oh’s due to a legal threat from the 1950s doo-wop group The Flamingos. As Flamin’ Oh’s, they issued two albums on Fat City Records: the self-titled debut (1980), known locally as the “green” album, and Oh! (1981), highlighted by the song “Stop.” Packed local shows followed at venues like Cabooze, Duffy’s, and the Longhorn. In 1985, they became The Oh’s with new members Gary Snow (bass and vocals) and Terry Braatz (guitar and vocals), releasing Desire (1985) and Paint the Sky (1986).
