Florence + the Machine is an English indie rock and art pop band formed in London in 2007 by vocalist Florence Welch and keyboardist Isabella Summers. The name originated as an in-joke from their earlier collaboration as Florence Robot/Isa Machine. The lineup has included guitarist Robert Ackroyd, harpist Tom Monger, drummer Christopher Lloyd Hayden, bassist Mark Saunders, and others, though some members departed after 2018. The band's debut album, Lungs, released in 2009, topped the UK Albums Chart and featured the single 'Dog Days Are Over.' Subsequent albums include Ceremonials (2011) and How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (2015), both reaching number one in the UK. Their music blends rock, soul, and dramatic elements with Welch's powerful vocals. Florence + the Machine gained early exposure through BBC Introducing and festivals like SXSW in 2008. They are recognized for energetic live performances, including headlining slots at events such as Latitude in 2010.
