GWAR formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984, evolving from Dave Brockie's punk band Death Piggy into a heavy metal/shock rock act with a rotating lineup of musicians and artists from Slave Pit Inc. The band portrays itself as interplanetary warriors, the Scumdogs of the Universe, banished to Earth. Their musical style blends metal with theatrical elements, characterized by satirical lyrics and elaborate costumes. Notable releases include the 1988 debut on Shimmy Disc Records and Scumdogs of the Universe (1990) on Metal Blade Records, following an earlier UK label deal. They have maintained a long association with Metal Blade. GWAR performances feature costumes, props, mock sacrifices of public figures, and chaotic stage antics, bringing large-scale visuals to small venues.
