HANABIE. formed in 2015 in Tokyo when high school classmates Yukina (vocals), Matsuri (guitar and vocals), Hettsu (bass and chorus), and Kaede (drums) came together in their school's light music club, inspired by Maximum the Hormone. Starting as a cover band, they shifted to originals with singles like 'CRASH OVER' and 'Sweets Killer' in 2016. After lineup changes, including drummers Boa (2017-2018) and Sae (2020), Chika joined on drums in 2023. The quartet blends metalcore, groove metal, hyperpop, and vocaloid into a style dubbed 'Harajuku-core,' marked by heavy riffs, Japanese subculture lyrics, and kawaii visuals. Key releases include their debut album Otome Kaikaku (2021, produced by Raku Taura of Crystal Lake) and major label debut album with Sony Music in 2023. Singles like 'LOVE Ranbu' (2022, TV theme) and 'NEET GAME' followed. They placed as runner-up in Japan's School’s Out competition (2017) and have performed at festivals including Dynamo Metalfest and Metaldays, with international tours building their reputation for high-energy shows combining aggressive metal and cute aesthetics.
