Joy Oladokun is a Nigerian-American singer-songwriter and producer born in Delaware, raised in Arizona, and based in Nashville. Inspired by Tracy Chapman at age 10, she began writing songs on guitar and later led worship music at her church until leaving after coming out as queer. She self-released her debut album Carry in 2016 via Kickstarter and secured a publishing deal after her song 'No Turning Back' featured in a viral video. Her style blends folk, soul, pop, and R&B with piano and guitar, addressing themes of identity, racism, spirituality, and LGBTQ+ experiences. Notable releases include in defense of my own happiness (2021), Proof of Life (2023), and Observations From a Crowded Room (2024), which she wrote and produced alone, incorporating electronic and psychedelic elements. She has received nominations for GLAAD Media Awards and Americana Music Honors & Awards, and collaborated with artists like Chris Stapleton and Maren Morris. Oladokun performs as a solo troubadour with guitar and piano, delivering intimate, vulnerable sets known for their emotional directness and community-building focus.
