Living Colour formed in New York City in 1984, led by guitarist Vernon Reid, with the core lineup stabilizing in 1986 featuring vocalist Corey Glover, bassist Muzz Skillings, and drummer Will Calhoun. Drawing from heavy metal, funk, jazz, hip-hop, blues, and alternative rock, the band signed with Epic Records after Mick Jagger produced demos following a CBGB performance. Their 1988 debut album Vivid reached number 6 on the US charts, driven by the single 'Cult of Personality,' which won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1989. The 1990 follow-up Time's Up incorporated jazz fusion, punk, and collaborations with artists like Queen Latifah and Little Richard; they headlined the inaugural Lollapalooza tour in 1991. After Skillings departed in 1992, Doug Wimbish joined for the 1993 album Stain. The band disbanded in 1995 amid creative differences but later reunited. Living Colour is known for high-energy live shows blending diverse styles and addressing social issues.
