Lynyrd Skynyrd formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1964 as My Backyard, with Ronnie Van Zant on vocals, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins on guitars, Larry Junstrom on bass, and Bob Burns on drums. The band adopted its name in 1969, referencing a gym teacher, and developed a Southern rock style featuring triple-guitar interplay and gritty lyrics. Their debut album, Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd (1973), included 'Free Bird,' which became a staple due to its extended guitar solos. The band achieved success with albums like (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd), Second Helping (1974), and Street Survivors (1977), but disbanded after a 1977 plane crash killed Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and others. They reformed in 1987 with Johnny Van Zant on vocals and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Lynyrd Skynyrd performances are known for high-energy live shows, including marathon renditions of 'Free Bird' and songs from the live album One More from the Road (1976).
