Mariachi El Bronx is the mariachi alter ego of the Los Angeles punk band The Bronx, formed in 2006 after a television appearance prompted the group to explore mariachi styles. Core members include vocalist Matt Caughthran, guitarist Joby J. Ford, drummer Jorma Vik, and others such as Brad Magers on trumpet, Ken Horne on jarana/guitar, and Vincent Hidalgo on guitarrón. The project draws from the band's Los Angeles roots amid Hispanic culture, blending punk's raw energy with mariachi traditions like norteño, son jarocho, huapango, bolero, and corridos. They released their self-titled debut album in 2009 on Swami Records, recorded in San Gabriel, California, followed by Mariachi El Bronx (II) in 2011 and Mariachi El Bronx (III) in 2014 at Haunted Hallow Studios in Virginia. A fourth album, Mariachi El Bronx (IV), emerged in 2026. The band performs original mariachi compositions under this persona alongside their punk shows, noted for authentic renditions that defy genre expectations. Mariachi El Bronx is recognized for live performances that highlight working-class storytelling shared between punk and mariachi, maintaining concurrent tours with The Bronx.
