Mariachi Sol de México was formed in 1981 by José Hernández, a fifth-generation mariachi musician from Jalisco roots, in the United States. The ensemble features traditional instrumentation including six violins, three trumpets, harp, guitarrón, vihuela, and Spanish guitar, blending mariachi with orchestral elements. The group has released multiple platinum-selling albums, with Hernández composing and arranging for 15 releases. They earned four Grammy nominations as the first mariachi ensemble so honored and have collaborated with artists such as Selena, Vicente Fernández, Luis Miguel, Linda Ronstadt, and the Beach Boys. Performances include sold-out concerts worldwide, from Beijing and Pyongyang to the White House for four U.S. presidents, and the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards. Known for dynamic live shows with young, versatile musicians who sing and play multiple instruments, Mariachi Sol de México emphasizes music education through Hernández's workshops and initiatives like the Mariachi Heritage Society.
