Metric is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 1998 in Toronto by Emily Haines (vocals, synths, guitar) and James Shaw (guitar, synths). The duo later expanded to include Josh Winstead (bass) and Joules Scott-Key (drums). The band's name derives from a keyboard sound programmed by Shaw, not the metric system. After relocating between Montreal, Brooklyn, and London in the early 2000s, Metric released their debut album in 2003, followed by Live It Out and Grow Up and Blow Away. Their sound evolved from guitar-driven indie rock toward synth-based new wave and electronic pop. Known for their energetic live performances, Metric has toured extensively across North America, Europe, South America, Australia, and Asia.
