MUNA is an indie pop trio formed in 2013 at the University of Southern California by Katie Gavin (vocals), Josette Maskin (guitar), and Naomi McPherson (guitar, production). The Los Angeles-based band members met in classes and began collaborating after initial jams, initially exploring progressive rock and punk before developing a style of glittering electronic pop with synths, bright drums, and themes of queer identity and emotional vulnerability. They self-released their debut EP in 2014 and signed with RCA Records for subsequent releases. Their discography includes the 2017 debut album About U, the 2019 album Saves the World, and the 2022 self-titled album MUNA on Phoebe Bridgers' Saddest Factory label, featuring the alternative radio hit 'Silk Chiffon.' After being dropped by RCA in 2020, they rebounded with this indie release. All members identify as queer, and the band incorporates political elements in their work. MUNA is recognized for energetic live performances, including tours supporting artists like Harry Styles.
