Phish is an American rock band formed in 1983 at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont. The band consists of guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, drummer Jon Fishman, and keyboardist Page McConnell, with Anastasio as the primary lead vocalist. Originally including guitarist Jeff Holdsworth, the current lineup stabilized after McConnell joined in 1985 and Holdsworth departed in 1986. Phish's music features improvisation, extended jams, and genre blending, drawing from progressive rock influences. They self-released the cassette Junta in 1989 and signed with Elektra Records in 1991, releasing albums such as A Picture of Nectar (1992) and Billy Breathes (1996). The band took hiatuses from 2000-2002 and disbanded briefly in 2004 before reuniting in 2008 for ongoing performances. Phish is known for live concerts emphasizing musical improvisation and a dedicated fan base, with performances often extending songs into lengthy jams.
