Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1986. The original lineup featured Black Francis (vocals and rhythm guitar), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass and vocals), and David Lovering (drums). Their sound combined punk rock energy, surreal or abstract lyrics, surf-rock touches, and abrupt shifts between quiet and loud dynamics, which became influential in the development of alternative rock. The band released early records including Come on Pilgrim and Surfer Rosa before breaking up in 1993. They later reunited and resumed touring and recording. In live settings, Pixies are known for performances built around their catalogue from the late 1980s and early 1990s, along with later material from their reunion-era releases.
