Rilo Kiley formed in 1998 in Los Angeles, California, with Jenny Lewis on vocals and guitar, Blake Sennett on guitar and vocals, Pierre de Reeder on bass and keyboards, and initial drummer Dave Rock, later replaced by Jason Boesel. Lewis and Sennett, former child actors, began writing songs together in the mid-1990s after being introduced by a mutual friend. The band started on Barsuk Records with the 2001 debut Take Offs and Landings, moved to Saddle Creek for 2002's The Execution of All Things, and released More Adventurous in 2004 and Under the Blacklight in 2007 on Brute/Beaute, shifting toward pop and R&B influences. Their style blended indie rock with Americana elements, country, and emo influences, evolving across releases. The band disbanded in 2011 amid reported internal disagreements. A 2013 compilation Rkives collected B-sides and rarities. Live performances featured Lewis's songwriting and the band's dynamic interplay, supporting multiple tours.
