Rise Against is an American punk rock band formed in Chicago in 1999 by bassist Joe Principe and guitarist Dan Wleklinski, later joined by vocalist Tim McIlrath and drummer Brandon Barnes. The current lineup includes McIlrath on vocals and rhythm guitar, lead guitarist Zach Blair, bassist Joe Principe, and drummer Brandon Barnes. Rooted in hardcore punk, their music features melody, catchy hooks, aggressive sound, rapid tempos, and lyrics addressing social commentary on politics, animal rights, humanitarianism, and environmentalism. The band debuted with the 2001 album The Unraveling on Fat Wreck Chords, followed by Siren Song of the Counter Culture (2004), which brought mainstream success via singles like 'Give It All' and 'Swing Life Away.' Subsequent releases include The Sufferer & the Witness (2006), peaking at number ten on the Billboard 200, Appeal to Reason (2008) with the Gold-certified 'Savior,' and Nowhere Generation (2021). They have achieved multi-Gold and Platinum status. Rise Against performs with high energy, often fostering mosh pits in venues from small Chicago clubs to international stages.
