Sepultura is a Brazilian heavy metal band formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984 by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera. Initially influenced by thrash, death, and black metal, the band released early works including the 1985 split EP Bestial Devastation with Overdose and the 1986 debut album Morbid Visions, featuring the track 'Troops of Doom'. After signing with Roadrunner Records, they issued Schizophrenia in 1987, solidifying their role in the groove and thrash metal scenes. The band's style evolved to incorporate alternative metal, world music, nu metal, hardcore punk, and industrial elements, notably on albums like Chaos A.D. (1993) and Roots (1996). Max Cavalera departed in 1996, followed by Igor in 2006, leading to lineup changes while maintaining activity. Sepultura's live performances are recognized for their high energy and brutal intensity, drawing from their underground origins. They remain active, having released over 60 recordings and influencing global metal scenes.
