SOJA is an American reggae band from Arlington, Virginia. The name is an acronym for Soldiers of Jah Army, and the group was formed in 1997 by high-school friends including Jacob Hemphill and Bobby Lee Jefferson. Their sound blends roots reggae with rock influences, and they have toured extensively as an independent act before releasing music through ATO Records. The band’s recorded output includes albums such as Creeping In, Get Wiser, Strength to Survive, Amid the Noise and Haste, and Poetry in Motion. SOJA won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for Beauty in the Silence. Live, the group is known for full-band reggae performances built around Hemphill’s vocals and guitar, with a horn section and a catalog that has made them a regular presence on reggae and roots-music bills.
