Sponge is an American rock band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1992 by vocalist Vinnie Dombroski, guitarists Mike Cross and Joey Mazzola, bassist Tim Cross, and drummer Jimmy Paluzzi. Emerging from the remnants of the hard rock band Loudhouse, the group adopted its name before their first live show in 1993 and developed a dual-guitar sound influenced by Detroit's rock heritage, including MC5. The band's debut album, Rotting Piñata (1994), achieved platinum status and featured the hit single 'Plowed,' along with 'Neenah Menasha.' Their follow-up, Wax Ecstatic (1996), included the title track recognized by Rolling Stone as Song of the Year and 'Have You Seen Mary.' Sponge has released nine studio albums and seven charting singles, four reaching Billboard's top 10, while undergoing lineup changes; the current version includes the Patalan brothers, Kyle Neely on guitar, and Dave Coughlin on drums. Sponge maintains an active presence with local performances in the Detroit area and national tours, building a dedicated following known for their gritty alternative rock sound.
