Steel Pulse is a British roots reggae band formed in 1975 in Handsworth, Birmingham, England, by David Hinds and Selwyn Brown. The group developed a politically conscious style rooted in reggae, with influences from ska, punk, rock, and other Caribbean rhythms. Their 1978 debut album, Handsworth Revolution, is widely cited as a major British reggae release, and Babylon the Bandit won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985, making Steel Pulse the first non-Jamaican act to receive that honor. The band has also been noted for early crossover visibility, including appearances on major U.S. television and a performance at President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inauguration. Live, Steel Pulse are known for extended roots-reggae performances centered on socially conscious songs and a tight horn-driven sound.
