Stephen Wilson Jr., born July 11, 1979, in Seymour, southern Indiana, began his career as a competitive boxer, reaching Indiana State Golden Gloves finalist status, before studying microbiology at Middle Tennessee State University. There, he formed the indie rock band AutoVaughn as a self-taught guitarist. After the band, he worked in food science at Mars' R&D lab and as a staff songwriter for BMG Nashville from 2016, penning tracks for artists including Tim McGraw and Old Dominion. Signing with Big Loud Records in 2023 marked his solo breakthrough. His music blends country, indie rock, and grunge, termed 'Death Cab For Country,' influenced by Johnny Cash, Nirvana, and Hank Williams. Key releases include the 2023 debut EP bon aqua, the double album søn of dad, inspired by his father's 2018 death, and the 2025 covers EP Blankets featuring Nirvana and Smashing Pumpkins tracks. A 2025 deluxe edition of søn of dad added acoustic and live recordings. Wilson is recognized for emotive live performances showcasing guitar skill and powerful vocals, with sold-out U.S. tours in 2025.
