The Afghan Whigs formed in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1986, with core members Greg Dulli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Rick McCollum (lead guitar), John Curley (bass), and Steve Earle (drums). Emerging from the indie scene, they debuted with the self-released Big Top Halloween (1988) and signed to Sub Pop, releasing Up in It (1990) and the breakthrough Congregation (1992), which incorporated soul and R&B elements into their alternative rock sound. They moved to Elektra Records for Gentlemen (1993), featuring singles "Debonair" and "Gentlemen," followed by Black Love (1996) and 1965 (1998). The band disbanded in 2001 but reunited in 2012, issuing Do to the Beast (2014) and In Spades (2017). Known for intense live performances blending raw energy, soulful grooves, and Dulli's commanding stage presence, they distinguish themselves through dynamic shows.
