The Bad Plus - Upcoming SoCal Concerts

The Bad Plus is an American jazz group formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2000 by bassist Reid Anderson, drummer Dave King, and pianist Ethan Iverson, who had played together since 1989. Initially a piano trio known for blending jazz with rock influences, the band signed to Columbia Records after a Village Vanguard performance and released albums including These Are the Vistas (2003), Give (2004), and Prog (2007). Iverson departed in 2017, replaced briefly by pianist Orrin Evans, before the group expanded to a quartet in 2021 with guitarist Ben Monder and saxophonist Chris Speed, issuing a self-titled album in 2022. The quartet configuration emphasized Anderson and King's compositions, maintaining the band's dynamic sound through intense rehearsals. They performed at venues like the Village Vanguard and Yoshi’s, delivering experimental sets that incorporated covers such as Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and their own material with rock-infused energy. The band announced its disbandment by the end of 2026.
