The Black Angels are a psychedelic rock band formed in Austin, Texas, in May 2004 by Christian Bland and Alex Maas, who took their name from the Velvet Underground song 'The Black Angel's Death Song.' The initial lineup included drummer Stephanie Bailey, keyboardist Jennifer Raines, and bassist Nate Ryan, with later members such as Kyle Hunt and Jake Garcia. Influenced by 1960s psych-rock artists like Syd Barrett, Roky Erickson, and Arthur Lee, the band draws on drone, garage, and acid rock elements. They have released six studio albums, including their 2006 debut Passover, Directions to See a Ghost (2008), Phosphene Dream (2010), Death Song (2017), and Wilderness of Mirrors (2022). The Black Angels co-founded Austin Psych Fest, which evolved into the Levitation Festival, supporting psychedelic and garage rock. Their live performances emphasize immersive, heavy psych-rock soundscapes.
