The English Beat, known as The Beat in the UK, formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978 by vocalist-guitarist Dave Wakeling, guitarist Andy Cox, bassist David Steele, and drummer Everett Morton. Ranking Roger joined as a second vocalist in 1979, adding toasting elements, while saxophonist Saxa later completed the lineup. The band emerged from the Two Tone ska revival, blending punk, reggae, ska, pop, and soul. Their debut album, I Just Can't Stop It, released in 1980 on their Go-Feet label, reached number three on the UK charts. Followed by Wha'ppen? (1981) and Special Beat Service (1982), the group disbanded in 1983. Wakeling and Ranking Roger formed General Public, while Cox and Steele created Fine Young Cannibals. The band reformed in the early 2000s with Wakeling leading, continuing to perform. The English Beat is recognized for energetic live shows featuring danceable rhythms and collaborations with Two Tone contemporaries like The Specials.
