The Flaming Lips formed in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1983, initially with Wayne Coyne on guitar, his brother Mark on lead vocals, Michael Ivins on bass, and Dave Kostka on drums. After Mark's departure in 1985, Wayne took over vocals, and the band released early albums including Hear It Is (1986), Oh My Gawd!!! (1987), and Telepathic Surgery (1989) on independent labels. They signed with Warner Bros. in the early 1990s, achieving a Billboard Alternative chart #9 hit with 'She Don't Use Jelly' in 1994. Known for neo-psychedelic rock blending experimental elements, noise, and orchestral pop, the band gained critical acclaim with albums such as Clouds Taste Metallic (1995), The Soft Bulletin (1999), Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (2002), and At War with the Mystics (2006). Current members include Wayne Coyne, with frequent collaborators like Steven Drozd and Derek Brown. The Flaming Lips are recognized for elaborate live performances featuring visual spectacles, including Coyne traversing crowds in a human-sized plastic bubble, confetti, and theatrical elements.
