The Format was an indie pop band formed in Peoria, Arizona, in 2001 by Nate Ruess (vocals) and Sam Means (multi-instrumentalist). The duo toured and recorded with a revolving lineup of musicians, including guitarists Mike Schey and Mark Buzard, bassist Don Raymond, and drummer Adam Boyd by 2007. The band's name satirized the music industry's formulaic approach to hits. They gained regional attention with the EP single 'The First Single' on Western Tread, leading to a 2002 signing with Elektra Records. Their debut album, Interventions + Lullabies, followed in 2003. After label issues, they released Dog Problems in 2006 via The Vanjet or Snocap. Active until 2008, the band toured extensively, supporting acts like Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World, and headlining 1,000-capacity venues.
