The Growlers formed in Dana Point, California, in 2006, with Brooks Nielsen on vocals and Matt Taylor on lead guitar as founding members. Originally from southern California, the band relocated to Costa Mesa. Early lineups included drummer Brian Stewart, keyboardist Clark Davison, and bassist Scott Montoya, though the current configuration features Nielsen and keyboardist/guitarist Kyle Straka, following departures like Montoya and bassist Anthony Braun Perry in 2016. The band's music blends surf, pop, rock, and beat elements, often termed 'Beach Goth,' incorporating psychedelic surf themes about zombies, graveyards, and nightlife. They have released seven albums, several EPs, and singles, starting with a self-recorded full-length in 2007. The Growlers are recognized for their hypnotic, intoxicated live performances, occasionally featuring drag attire and off-kilter rock 'n' roll presentations.
