The Movement formed in Columbia, South Carolina, in 2003 as a trio consisting of Josh Swain, Jordan Miller, and Jon Ruff (DJ Riggles). Influenced by Sublime, 311, and Slightly Stoopid, the band blends reggae, rock, and hip-hop elements with prominent drum and bass rhythms. Early lineup changes included Ruff's departure in 2006, followed by the additions of drummer Gary Jackson and bassist Jason Schmidt after recording their 2008 album Set Sail at Philadelphonic Studios. Swain briefly left in 2010, but returned, while Miller exited; the current lineup features Swain on lead vocals and guitar, Schmidt on bass, Jackson on drums, Matt Goodwin on keyboards, and Kyle Jerome on saxophone and percussion. The band's debut On Your Feet appeared in 2004, followed by Set Sail (2008), One More Night (2012, which reached #1 on iTunes Reggae Charts), and Ways of the World (2019, debuting at #1 on Billboard Reggae Chart and staying in the Top 10 for over 40 weeks). They are known for extended live performances that emphasize improvisation and audience interaction.
