The Strokes are an American rock band from New York City formed in 1998. The group’s core lineup consists of Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond Jr., Nikolai Fraiture, and Fabrizio Moretti. Early versions of the band formed while the members were schoolmates in Manhattan, and they began performing together before solidifying as a five-piece by 1999. The band released its debut EP, The Modern Age, in 2001 and followed with the album Is This It later that year. Their sound drew on garage rock, indie rock, and post-punk influences, and they became closely associated with the early-2000s rock revival. In live settings, The Strokes are known for guitar-driven performances built around their recorded material, with a catalog that includes later albums such as Room on Fire and The New Abnormal.
