The Temptations formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1961 when members from two rival vocal groups, The Primes (Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams) and The Distants (Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, and Elbridge Bryant), combined and auditioned for Motown under the name The Elgins. Signed to Motown's Miracle Records, they adopted the name The Temptations. The 'Classic Five' lineup, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks, and David Ruffin, emerged in 1964, producing hits like 'The Way You Do the Things You Do' and 'My Girl.' Known for smooth R&B harmonies, romantic ballads, and later psychedelic soul, they released albums such as Cloud Nine, which earned a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group in 1969. The group has undergone numerous lineup changes over six decades, with Otis Williams as the sole original member. Live, The Temptations are recognized for precise choreography and vocal interplay, as seen in Ed Sullivan Show performances of medleys including 'My Girl' and 'All I Need' in 1967.
