Waxahatchee is the solo project of Katie Crutchfield, formed in 2010 after the breakup of her band P.S. Eliot, which she shared with her twin sister Allison. Raised near Waxahatchee Creek in Alabama and emerging from Birmingham's punk scene, Crutchfield began playing in bands like The Ackleys at age 15. She recorded her debut album American Weekend in her childhood bedroom in 2012, followed by Cerulean Salt (2013), Ivy Tripp (2015), Saint Cloud (2020), and Tigers Blood (2024), often produced by Brad Cook. Her music blends indie rock, folk, and punk influences, characterized by raw, personal lyrics. Albums like Saint Cloud and Tigers Blood, recorded at Sonic Ranch in Texas with collaborators including MJ Lenderman and Spencer Tweedy, marked shifts toward fuller band arrangements. Waxahatchee has toured extensively, supporting acts such as Tegan and Sara, Kurt Vile, and Sleater-Kinney. Live, she is known for dynamic performances that evolved from solo basement shows to collaborative band sets emphasizing energy and interplay.
