Tongva Park transforms a former parking lot into a 6-acre urban oasis in Santa Monica, featuring a central amphitheater that hosts vibrant live music and cultural events. Designed by James Corner Field Operations and completed in 2014, it honors the indigenous Tongva people with rolling hills, braided paths inspired by arroyo washes, and iconic trees like the massive 'Morty' Moreton Bay fig and the 100-ton 'Three Amigos' rusty figs, relocated during construction. Divided into Observation Hill, Discovery Hill, Garden Hill, and Gathering Hill, the park offers ocean vistas from shell-like overlooks, a splash pad, playground, and over 100 plant species for a dynamic, seasonal atmosphere. Known for free summer series like 'Tongva after Dark' and Endless Summer C.A.M.P., it showcases diverse genres including jazz on the lawn, Latin American cumbia, Hawaiian dance, Balkan music, and Grammy-winning artists, alongside youth performances and craft workshops. Nestled near the Santa Monica Pier in a lively downtown neighborhood, its multi-level design and public art create an inviting, community-focused vibe perfect for picnics and performances under the stars, blending nature with civic energy.
