Whisky a Go Go - West Hollywood, CA | Concert Schedule

The Whisky a Go Go stands as one of rock and roll's most storied venues, occupying a former 1923 bank building on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. Since opening on January 16, 1964, this intimate 500-capacity nightclub has served as the launching pad for countless legendary acts, from The Doors, who performed as the house band seven nights a week, to Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Guns N' Roses, Nirvana, and Metallica during their formative years. The venue's compact, high-energy atmosphere, described as "a cauldron of sweat and energy", defines its appeal. The bare-bones interior features a small stage tucked into a corner and elevated above the floor, curved red leather booths lining one wall, and a small L-shaped balcony, much as it appeared in the 1960s. This cramped, dark setting proved instrumental in shaping the Los Angeles music scene across multiple decades, hosting everything from folk and psychedelic rock to punk, metal, and grunge. The Whisky's cultural significance extends beyond its performances. It pioneered the "go-go dancer" concept when DJ Joanie Labine danced in a suspended cage between sets, establishing an iconic aesthetic that spread nationwide. Today, the venue remains a pilgrimage site for music fans and continues hosting live performances, maintaining its status as the first live music venue inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
